USAA was created in San Antonio in 1922 by a group of 25 United States Army officers as a mechanism for mutual self-insurance after they were unable to obtain motor insurance due to the belief that military personnel were a high-risk group.

Since then, USAA has expanded to provide banking and insurance services to former and current members of the Armed Forces, officers and enlisted, as well as their families. The firm was placed 96th in the 2020 Fortune 500 list of the top organizations in the United States by total revenue and appeared on Fortune’s 2021 Blue Ribbon list of companies, ranking 355th on the Fortune Global 500 and 94th on the Fortune 500.

Will my auto policy rates increase?

Many factors could affect your rate. One reason that causes premium increases is statewide changes due to general inflation and actual claims experience. Even if your premium increases, we’re confident our rates are competitive.

I’ve been in an accident. Should I file an auto claim?

You should always report a car accident to your insurance company to alert them about the incident. You can then choose whether to file a claim with your insurance company, the other driver’s insurance company or not at all.

We recommend you file a claim if:

  • Someone got hurt as a result of the accident.
  • You cause minimal damage to someone else’s vehicle or their property.
  • You cause serious damage to someone else or their property.
  • You cause damage to a municipality’s property, such as a guardrail, telephone pole or street sign.

You may not want to file a claim if:

  • You cause minimal damage to your own vehicle or property, and the damage is less than your deductible.
  • You don’t want to fix your vehicle and it’s not owned by any other party, lease, or finance company. 

How long will my auto claim take?

We try to close claims as quickly after determining what you’re owed based on your coverage. But the time it takes to resolve a claim depends on how complex the claim is and the number of vehicles and injuries involved. Simple claims may take an hour, while more complex claims may take weeks.

Depending on your claim, you may be able to use the USAA Mobile App’s photo estimation tool and receive an estimate in as little as four hours.

You have the right to choose which shop repairs your vehicle. By law, we’re not allowed to tell you which repair shop to use. Your policy may cover reasonable repair costs no matter where you go. If you use a USAA-preferred shop for repairs, we’ll manage the repair and payments for you. Once the repair is complete, the claim will pay out and close.

Choose electronic funds transfer (EFT) as your payment method, and we’ll deposit the amount owed directly to your bank account.
